Dr. Joyce Welcomes President Trump’s “Drug Czar” to PA-13, Vows to Fight Drug Crisis
Somerset, PA, October 16, 2020
Somerset, PA – Today Congressman John Joyce, M.D. (PA-13) hosted President Trump’s “Drug Czar,” the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) Director Jim Carroll, for discussions with local leaders to discuss the drug crisis and our region’s response. They held roundtable discussions in both Westmoreland and Somerset Counties.
“In Pennsylvania and across our nation, no community is immune from the ravages of drug abuse and addiction,” said Congressman Joyce. “From countering the trafficking of illicit drugs into Pennsylvania to equipping law enforcement and health care professionals to support our communities, we must work together to combat substance abuse and its toll on our region. President Trump and White House Office of National Drug Control Policy Director Jim Carroll are incredible partners in this fight, and I am grateful for Director Carroll’s commitment to western Pennsylvania. This is a team effort, and we must keep collaborating along federal, state, and local lines to support communities, protect families, and save lives.”
As the head of ONDCP, Director Carroll leads the Trump Administration’s work to reduce drug use and its consequences by leading and coordinating the development, implementation, and assessment of U.S. drug policy.
During today’s conversation in Ligonier, Congressman Joyce and Director Carroll formally announced the addition of Westmoreland County to the federal High-Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) program. The HIDTA program provides local law enforcement with enhanced operations ability, information sharing, and funding to better address the threat of drug trafficking in local communities.
