Dr. Joyce: We Must Protect our Health Care Infrastructure from Cyber Attacks

Washington, DC ? Today, Congressman John Joyce M.D. (PA-13) advocated for securing America's digital medical records from ransomware and other cyber-attacks. In an Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations hearing entitled "Stopping Digital Thieves: The Growing Threat of Ransomware" Dr. Joyce underscored the need to protect patients' critical date from bad actors.

"As a doctor, I am aware of the growing importance of securing patients' Personal Identifiable Information and medical records" said Dr. Joyce. "This body must take a proactive approach to strengthen all critical infrastructure and ensure America's medical data is safe from those who choose to do harm."

During the hearing, Dr. Joyce spoke with the Medical Director of Cybersecurity at the University of California San Diego Health, Dr. Christian Dameff, on the effects that ransomware has on medical institutions. They discussed potential solutions that Congress could enact to ensure health care facilities are better prepared to deal with ransomware attacks in the future.
