Dr. Joyce: America Must Hold the Chinese Government Accountable for Human Rights Atrocities

July 1, 2021

Washington, DC Congressman John Joyce M.D. (PA-13) condemned the ongoing human rights atrocities committed by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). As the CCP today marks the 100th year of its rule, Dr. Joyce underscored the importance of standing with the people of China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan amid a violent crackdown on their personal liberties.

"We must support the Chinese people's right to free expression, their right to share information, their right to privacy, and their right to life itself," said Dr. Joyce. "As Americans celebrate the Fourth of July and our nation's commitment to these rights, we must remember that our freedom is too precious to be taken for granted."

Watch Dr. Joyce's comments here and read his remarks as prepared for delivery below.

As the Chinese Communist Party marks a century of power, Americans must renew our efforts to hold this regime accountable for its human rights atrocities.

The Chinese government has imprisoned more than one million Uyghurs, persecuting this religious minority for their fundamental beliefs. This regime has a vicious legacy of targeting human beings, who like all image bearers are worthy of dignity and respect.

For 100 years, the Chinese Communist Party has committed gross violations of human rights mass imprisonment, torture, and genocide.

Now more than ever, Americans must stand strong with the people of China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. We must support the Chinese people's right to free expression, their right to privacy, and their right to life itself.

As Americans celebrate the Fourth of July and our nation's commitment to these rights, we must remember that our freedom is too precious to be taken for granted.

As President Ronald Reagan said, "Freedom is a fragile thing and it's never more than one generation away from extinction."

As our nation celebrates the generations of Americans who dedicated their lives to the pursuit of government "of the people, by the people, and for the people," we should heed these wise words.

Thank you, and I yield.
