Dr. Joyce Announces 2026 Congressional Art Competition Winner

June 18, 2026

Washington, D.C. Congressman John Joyce, M.D. (PA-13) announced Leah Ritchey as the winner of the 2026 Congressional Art Competition for Pennsylvania’s 13th Congressional District. Leah’s artwork will hang in the U.S. Capitol along with other winners from across the country. The artwork submitted by runners-up will be displayed in Congressman Joyce’s offices across the 13th District.

Leah Ritchey, a Ninth Grade Student at Cumberland Valley Christian School in Chambersburg, PA, submitted “Blazing Liberty” an acrylic painting of Lady Liberty holding her torch as “250” rises in smoke behind her — a powerful tribute to America’s enduring spirit as our nation approaches its 250th anniversary. She is the daughter of Jesse Walizer.

“As we look ahead to celebrating America’s 250th anniversary, Leah’s artwork distinguished itself through its striking portrayal of the Statue of Liberty, one of the nation’s most recognizable symbols,” said Congressman Joyce. “Her piece reflects both exceptional artistic talent and a deep appreciation for the values of freedom and opportunity that define our nation. Thank you to Leah for sharing a piece that celebrates our nation’s beauty and the enduring values that unite us as Americans.”

"Leah's ability to transform her idea into an expressive visual work of art reflects her creativity and her dedication to excellence. Her passion for art, combined with her hard-working nature, allowed her to create an original painting for our countries' 250th anniversary," said Leah’s art teacher, Lisa Fisler.

“When I think about America's patriotic side, I think of how we have fireworks for celebrations like the 4th of July, how one of our biggest landmarks is the Statue of Liberty, and how the country's colors are red, white, and blue,” said Leah Ritchey. “The Blazing Liberty is a painting of the USA's Statue of Liberty in a red and blue shading to represent the patriotism of the country as well as the red, white, and blue fireworks, with a fire producing smoke that says 250 representing the 250th anniversary.”

"Leah is a creative and self-motivated young artist who has largely taught herself art through curiosity, practice, and perseverance. In addition to drawing and painting, she has independently explored a few musical instruments and a variety of other crafts, always eager to learn new skills. Her strong Christian faith and character are reflected in the kindness, integrity, and dedication she brings to everything she does. This award is a wonderful recognition of her natural talent, hard work, and passion for creativity," said Jesse Walizer, Leah’s mother.
