Dr. Joyce Calls for Expedited Federal Support for Pennsylvania Growers Impacted by Devastating Crop Freeze
Washington, D.C. – In a letter to U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary Brooke Rollins, Congressman John Joyce, M.D. (PA-13) urged the Secretary to issue a Secretarial Disaster Declaration for Pennsylvania fruit growers impacted by unprecedented low temperatures in April.
“Pennsylvania agriculture is a central component of our rural communities, and fruit growers are now facing devastating losses caused by abnormally low temperatures during a critical point in the growing season,” said Congressman Joyce. “This freeze has placed an extraordinary financial burden on orchards across our district and threatens the livelihoods of countless farming families. The USDA must act swiftly to provide growers with the resources and support they need to recover, safeguard their operations, and preserve the long-term strength of Pennsylvania’s agricultural industry.”
One of the nation’s leading producers of apples, peaches, grapes, cherries, and strawberries, Pennsylvania’s agricultural economy could face significant economic losses due to the late April freeze. Estimates from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture indicate that Pennsylvania’s specialty crop industry could face between $150 million and $200 million in economic losses — threatening family farms, rural jobs, and local food supply chains.
In sending the letter, Congressman Joyce was joined by Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01), Madeleine Dean (PA-04), Glenn “GT” Thompson (PA-05), Rob Bresnahan (PA-08), Lloyd Smucker (PA-11), Mike Kelly (PA-16), and Chris Deluzio (PA-17). To view the letter, click here.
