Dr. Joyce Statement on FY2021 Appropriations, COVID-19 Relief

December 21, 2020

Washington, DC Congressman John Joyce (PA-13) released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives advanced the Senate Amendment to H.R. 133, the Consolidated Appropriations Act, which includes COVID-19 relief for American families, workers, farmers, and small businesses.

"The U.S. Constitution clearly states that Congress is entrusted with ?providing for the common defense' and ?promoting the general welfare' of our nation. Tonight, the House advanced legislation to bolster our national defense, support our law enforcement community, defend the sanctity of life, and provide long-overdue relief to struggling Americans.

"The FY2021 appropriations bill includes key support for our Armed Forces, including a three percent raise for our servicemembers, as well as funds to continue construction of the southern border wall. It also pushes back on the progressives' radical agenda by blocking Democrats' efforts to defund the police. Importantly, this legislation includes critical pro-life protections that ensure American taxpayer dollars will never fund abortion.

"After months of fighting for our small businesses, I am grateful that this legislation will reopen the Paycheck Protection Program, saving jobs and providing a lifeline to small businesses struggling under the restrictions of burdensome shutdowns. It also will offer direct assistance for American individuals, families, and children in need a provision championed by President Donald Trump and make additional investments in COVID-19 vaccines, testing, and support for frontline health care heroes. This legislation, though far from perfect, will offer hope to American families as we near the end of this incredibly difficult year.

"At the same time, the vastly irresponsible process by which this legislation reached a final vote is unacceptable, and I urge Speaker Pelosi to restore regular order in the People's House.

"Furthermore, it is despicable that Speaker Pelosi and the Democrats squandered months of valuable time while American families, workers, farmers, and small businesses suffered. This breathless political stunt demonstrates the worst of their misguided politics. The American people should never forget that the Democrats proudly withheld relief from children, families, and workers in order to handicap President Trump and other political rivals. The citizens of this great land deserve far better."
