Homeland Security Committee Tasks Joyce With Increased Responsibility In Border Security Effort

October 6, 2020

13th District Lawmaker Vows To Examine Border’s Impact On Opioid Epidemic

Congressman John Joyce (PA-13) Thursday was appointed to the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Border Security, Facility and Operations. The role will give Joyce further involvement in the efforts of the Department of Homeland Security to reduce illegal immigration and secure the border.

Speaking of his new assignment, Joyce said, "There have been more calls coming into our office in favor of building the wall and securing our border than on any other topic and my increased input on such a critical issue is a positive for the people of the 13th District. One of my primary concerns about the crisis at the southern border is how it is fueling the opioid epidemic that has impacted families all across the country. Working with my colleagues to develop innovative ways to keep harmful drugs out of the country and combat the crisis will be a top priority of mine on this subcommittee."

Nearly 300 Americans die every week from heroin related overdoses and 90 percent of heroin in the United States comes across the southern border.

Joyce has repeatedly advocated for funding additional physical barriers on the southern border during his first month in office. He has also pushed for further investments in 21st century technology and manpower to stem the flow of illegal immigration, drugs, and human trafficking.

Joyce, a doctor, was also appointed to the Subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness, Response and Recovery, which has oversight on issues related to first responders and FEMA.
