Joyce Applauds Trump’s Support to Reverse California’s Reckless EV Mandate

January 21, 2025

Washington, D.C. – Congressman John Joyce, M.D. (PA-13), a staunch advocate for consumer freedom and reversal of California’s Electric Vehicle (EV) mandate, applauded President Donald J. Trump’s opposition to the outgoing Biden Administration’s waiver for California’s Electric Vehicle Mandate.

“I am pleased to hear President Trump signal support for reversing the Biden Administration’s waiver for this disastrous California policy that threatens consumer choice for Americans throughout the country,” said Energy and Commerce Vice-Chair John Joyce, M.D.“I have long supported reversing this out-of-touch mandate and I look forward to working with President Trump and his Administration to make H.R. 346 the law of the land.”

During Monday’s Inaugural Address to the nation, President Trump made the following remarks on the harmful California EV mandate: “We will revoke the electric vehicle mandate, saving our auto industry and keeping my sacred pledge to our great American auto workers. In other words, you’ll be able to buy the car of your choice.”

Background:

  • Last month, the Biden Administration provided a waiver approving California’s EV mandate.
  • Due to California’s unique status in the Clean Air Act, sixteen other states, including Pennsylvania, have adopted California’s previous standards, affecting nearly 40% of the automobile market.
  • In the current 119th Congress, Dr. Joyce leads H.R. 346, the Preserving Choice in Vehicle Purchases Act, which would amend Federal law to block attempts by California to eliminate the sale of internal combustion engines by 2035 and prevent future policies that try to block the sale of internal combustion engines.
  • In the 118th Congress (2023-2024), Dr. Joyce led H.R. 1435, legislation to block electric vehicle mandates and protect consumer choice.
  • In the 117th Congress (2021-2022), Dr. Joyce led a letter to the Biden Administration with 168 cosigners relaying disapproval of California’s regulation.
  • Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) introduced the Senate companion in the 118th Congress.
