Joyce On President Trump’s New Tariffs On China: “Going into the long-term we’re going to see success from this”

October 6, 2020

Congressman John Joyce (PA-13) yesterday was in Somerset where he spoke with members of the media about the ongoing trade negotiations between the United States and China. Joyce pointed out that China has been taking advantage of the United States for far too long and that President Trump's new tariffs are tools that will bring China to the negotiating table and will produce a deal that will benefit the American economy in the long run.

President Trump on Friday raised tariffs on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods and took steps to tax nearly all of China's imports as punishment for what he said was Beijing's attempt to andldquo;renegotiateandrdquo; a trade deal.

A video and transcript of Joyce's interview can be found below.

TRANSCRIPT

CONGRESSMAN JOYCE: I think that that the trade situation with China is a tool that the President is using to bring China to the negotiating table. China for years has stolen intellectual property. They have not played on a level playing field. This is going to be a lesson to China that they are going to have to understand how important it is to negotiate andndash; to negotiate with the United States. And we're going to see this is going to be a rocky road in the short-term, but going into the long-term we're going to see success from this.
