Joyce Statement On Bipartisan Budget Act of 2019

October 6, 2020

Congressman John Joyce (PA-13) today released the following statement after opposing H.R. 3877, the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2019:

"As a small business owner, I understand what it's like to make the hard choices that are required in order to balance a check book. One cannot just keep borrowing money without ramifications in the private sector, and it's now time that the federal government adopt that model.

"While I believe President Trump fought valiantly to secure a deal that would pair a debt ceiling increase with spending cuts that would help get our fiscal house in order, I'm disappointed that Nancy Pelosi and the rest of the obstructionist Democrats made that impossible for him.

"I was sent to the Capitol to work for fiscal responsibility, and this legislation falls short of achieving that goal.

"Not only do we have an obligation to future generations to cut spending and return to fiscal constraint, we also have a duty to lower prescription drug costs, and to reform our outdated trade agreements by passing the USMCA before it's too late. This budget, which lacks all three of those components, is a measure that I could not in good conscience support."
