May 2, 2022

Washington, DC – Congressman John Joyce M.D. (PA-13) today announced that Meagan McHale of Somerset County has been offered an appointment to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for the Class of 2026. Meagan is a graduate of Chambersburg High School and is the daughter of Peter and Elizabeth Lancaster.

“Congratulations to Meagan McHale of Franklin County upon her appointment to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy for the Class of 2026. Last fall, it was my privilege to nominate Meagan and to recognize her strong desire to serve our nation. Through her exemplary preparation, Meagan has demonstrated a dedication to grow, lead, and serve,” said Congressman Joyce. “The service academy appointment process is highly selective and competitive. I am thrilled that Meagan has received an appointment to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, and I commend her and her family on this great achievement.”

"I would like to thank God, my grandparents, parents, Ian, family, and friends who have believed in me,” said Meagan McHale. “Thank you to Commander Apgar and Master Sergeant Montney from Chambersburg NJROTC, Lieutenant Colonel Firmin from Shippensburg ROTC, Professor Greenburg from Shippensburg University, as well as all the teachers and administrators who have supported me throughout the years.  Lastly, I would like to thank Congressman Joyce for providing me the opportunity to attend the United States Merchant Marine Academy.  It is my honor to be able to serve the United States of America."

All prospective students wishing to attend a U.S. service academy must be nominated by a Member of Congress or another U.S. official and then are rigorously evaluated by the service academies, which determine appointments.
