Update on the Coronavirus
Our nation is preparing for the potential spread of the coronavirus, which began in China and has affected people across the world. Also called COVID-19, this virus can cause respiratory illness with symptoms including fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Currently, experts believe that these symptoms, ranging from mild to severe, may appear 2-14 days after exposure.
The U.S. government and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania are planning a coordinated response to protect Pennsylvanians. From the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), our public health experts are working together and taking precautions to mitigate the risks of this virus.
Protecting Our Community
All of us should practice good habits to stay healthy, including:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
- Stay up to date on vaccinations, including the flu vaccine.
If you have been in close contact with a person known to have COVID-19 or if you have recently traveled from an area with widespread or ongoing community spread of COVID-19, it is important to call your health care provider if you develop symptoms.
